Welcome!

Thu Dec 14, 2006, 3:16 PM
Hello all, and Welcome to Dreaming Whiskers Mousery.
What the heck is a Mousery, you ask? Well, Dog breeders have kennels, Cat breeders have catteries- we Mouse breeders have mouseries.
Why on earth would I want to breed mice? Because they are fun, easy to care for and come in about a million coat colors & textures.
Our mousery is located in North Carolina, near Charlotte. We do sell mice, and can reserve kits for you if you are willing to meet us to pick them up.
Feel free to comment and ask any (non-assinine) questions you may have about mice and mouse care.
Please do not ask us questions about how to kill the mice in your house. We will consider such questions crude and not talk to you.

To help you understand the notations in our gallery:
Mice come in many colors & color combinations. There are several basic catagories of color terms:
Colors: Black, Dove, White, Argente, ect.
Patterned colors: Brindle (tiger striped to some degree. Comes in several colors, eyes are always black.) , Smoke Brindle (the longer "guardhairs" are very dark, with a red undercoat, giving the mouse a smoky look. Has only occured in Brindle lines so far, and some of these may show brindling as well.)
Shaded Colors:Siamese (yes, just like a Siamese Cat, but much....smaller, & mousier. Essentially a cream body with darker brownish "points"), Himalayan (also like the cat color, a brown, grey, blue with darker points.)
Belly colors:Fox (white belly, any color above), Tan (tan belly, any color above)
Patterns:Marked, Banded Marked, Varigated Marked & Self
Any given mouse can have one color/patterned color, One Belly Color, and one pattern. Thus, you can have a Black Fox Marked, which is a Black mouse with a tan belly & white markings. All "Marked" mice have white markings. A "Tan" or "Fox" mouse is any mouse which has a tan or white belly instead of being the same color as their top. The "pattern" called "Self" isn't a pattern at all, but rather indicates an absence of markings. A Black Self is a plain black mouse.
Next comes coat Textures.
A normal coat is matte finish, straight, and short and this is what you will see on most mice. Less common and thus more desired are the other textures.
Satin: The coat is shiny. (see "Silver Sable" in our gallery.) All colors will appear darker on a satin coat. Satin may be combined with any hair texture except normal matte.
Longhair: Just what it sounds like. The Persian of Mice, without the squished face. Also called "Angora" by some.
Texel or "Astrex": A wavy coat, may occur in long or normal coat, looks more striking in long.
Rex:A curly coat, also in long or short. Very curly, not wavy. Also called "Merle" by some.

Hope this helps. If you need clarification, don't hesitate to ask.

Edit: No, it is not your imagination, I do name my Selfs after fictional characters and my Marked mice after Gods & Heros.
